An Iranian passenger plane owned by Caspian Airlines, with 135 people on board has skidded off the runway, onto a road in the early hours of January 27, 2020 (Monday) at Mahshahr, Iran. Fortunately, according to reports, no one was injured in the accident.

Passengers helped each other out of the twin-engine jet, carrying children. Some left through the main doors, while others climbed out emergency exits onto the plane wings. Emergency vehicles and teams soon arrived, with firefighters spraying water onto the plane. A quick action by the rescue team and flight crew might have averted a serious accident.

Photos from the scene show the Caspian Airlines MD-83 aircraft grounded in the middle of the road, with landing gears retracted. The aircraft, lying flat on its belly, however, appears largely undamaged. The aircraft looks to have overshot the runway. However, a detailed investigation should follow soon.

Caspian Airlines Flight 6936, operated with a 25 year old MD-83 registered EP-CPZ, departed from the capital city, Tehran, at 0635hrs local time (on Monday, January 27, 2020) and was set to land at Mahshahr Airport at 0750hrs local time, when it skidded onto Mahshahr-e-Ahwaz highway, located adjacent to the airport. The cause of the accident is still unknown; however, the Iran Civil Aviation Organization has opened an investigation into the same.
