Borders are opening and restrictions are being lifted so holidays abroad may soon be possible.  But, some people will not be confident about flying so Le Shuttle through the Eurotunnel may be a more attractive option.  Le Shuttle is also introducing a new refund policy for passengers who change their minds or cannot travel.  Passengers drive on at Folkestone and stay inside their own cars until they drive off at Calais in Pas de Calais a lovely region in Northern France

Pas de Calais a Department of Northern France

The rolling landscape and beach-fringed coastline of department of Pas de Calais in northern France is a lovely place for a holiday.  It features some very interesting towns and villages.  Boulogne sur Mer, Le Touquet and Montrieul sur Mer are just three of them.

Boulogne sur Mer is unusual because it has three separate areas; a fishing port; an historic old town; a vast sandy beach.  Its beach is sprinkled with blue and white beach huts and rows of land yachts – waiting for action.

Close to the sea front is the delightful La Matelote Hotel is a family-run hotel and restaurant combined.  It offers excellent food in its Michelin Star restaurant and a warm welcome in its cosy hotel.

Le Touquet was built as a resort incorporating golf courses and tennis courts.  A long promenade passes by the colourful sunshades of bathing areas.  Shops and restaurants line its shopping streets that lead back to an elegant town centre.

Hotel Castel Victoria is one of the oldest hotels in Le Touquet and full of character.  Twenty-five contemporary bedrooms offer all the facilities needed for a comfortable stay.

The little walled town of  Montreuil sur Mer is rich in history and abundant with excellent local produce.  My personal highlight was a stay at Maison76 ,an old Apothecary’s mansion, beautifully restored as a maison du charme.  Guests can relax in the elegant eighteenth century lounge or the tranquil, secluded walled garden. Tim is an excellent host.  He anticipates every need of his guests before they are aware of it themselves.  He provides an excellent breakfast featuring local and home-made produce.
