Kenya Airways is all set to resume flights from July 15 onwards. The airline had earlier suspended all flights in March this year as per the travel directives of the Kenyan government.

Kenya Airways Resumes Flights After President Lifts Travel Restrictions

The move comes after President Uhuru Kenyatta announced last Monday that restrictions on movement had been withdrawn. He also said that international flights would resume after August 1. “Today I order and direct that the cessation of movement into and out of the Nairobi metropolitan area, Mombasa county and Mandera county that is currently enforced shall lapse today or at 4 a.m. (0100 GMT) tomorrow, Tuesday, July 7 2020,” said Kenyatta in a televised address last week. Following the Presidential order, Kenya Airways is preparing to resume flights.

Financial Worries Continue

Kenya Airways must get back to flying. Earlier this year the airlines had sought government funding as it ran out of cash. The airlines also carried out a string of measures which included staff salary cuts of up to 80% and a large number of furloughs. The airline did receive a government aid of 8 billion shillings early this year, that was allocated for fleet maintenance.

Kenya Airways and Government Set Up Health Safety Measures

As Kenya Airways is set to resume services there is a concern about the safety of passengers. However, Kenya Airways and Kenya Airports Authority together have implemented a string of health safety measures. They are promoting the use of self Check-in kiosks and other self-service procedures at the airport. A message on their website states:

“In the process, we have made many critical changes to ensure we create a safe and secure corridor for our passengers.”
