ACCIDENT: Delta Connection CRJ-900 Rolls Inverted On Landing!

By Spyros Georgilidakis | February 18, 2025

An Endeavor Air CRJ-900, operating a Delta Connection flight, ended up upside down after landing in Toronto. Everyone on board survived.

This accident happened on Monday, the 17th of February, involving flight DL-4819. Endeavor Air, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Delta Air Lines, operates this flight daily using its CRJ-900 fleet. The flight departs from Minneapolis Saint Paul International (KMSP) at 10:30 AM, heading for Toronto Pearson International (CYYZ) in Canada.

This flight typically lasts about one-and-a-half hours. On the day of the accident, the flight departed with a delay of approximately one hour and 15 minutes, with 76 passengers and 4 crew on board. This suggests that the aircraft was completely full, barring any infants or jump-seating personnel.

The aircraft appeared to make a routine departure from Minneapolis using runway 30R, reaching FL290 in cruise. The Endeavor Air flight crew then prepared for an approach on runway 23 in Toronto.

Several Delta CRJ-900 Passengers Injured

At this time, we don’t know what caused this Delta Connection CRJ-900 to end up upside down. But it reportedly came to a stop on the runway in this position after losing both of its wings, its main gear and its tail surfaces.

These were the reported wind conditions minutes before the aircraft touched down on runway 23:

Fortunately, despite an intense fireball that was captured by security cameras showing the aircraft after it touched down (see update further down), the fuselage of the Delta Connection CRJ-900 remained relatively intact. Rescue crews assisted those on board and later transported several of them to hospitals.

Initially, the authorities stated that a total of eight people were injured, one of them critically. Later news reports raised the number of injuries to 15 people, 3 of them in critical condition.

Canada’s Transportation Safety Board (TSB) will investigate the accident, with the participation of the NTSB. The aircraft involved in the event has registration N932XJ and is fifteen years old, having initially flown in the colors of Northwest Airlines. A month later, the CRJ-900 started operating on behalf of Delta, following the merger of the two carriers.

A newer video showing the crash landing from the cockpit of another aircraft:

A newer photo (below) of the Delta Connection CRJ-900 after the crash, shows that the left main gear leg is still attached to the fuselage, as is part of the left wing. The charring from the fire is quite evident, too.

  • Petter already has a video up on his Mentour Now channel on this crash, complete with a really well done animation. https://youtu.be/DzTomOIX6ZQ?si=rCPKCo0V9tq__3eC

But this has me curious. I went back on that channel and the main one and I didn’t see a video on the DCA crash. Did he do one and take it down? Did he not do one because that crash had fatalities? Does Petter have a personal policy not to speculate or make videos on crashes involving fatalities until after a certain amount of time has passed or until after the full investigation is complete and made public?
