Amidst the Cataclysm, Air Baltic Lends a Hand!

By Ankur Deo | March 30, 2020

And yet again, Air Baltic is in the news for the right thing! After being one of the first airlines to introduce a free travel postponement policy for passengers, Air Baltic has now performed a special cargo flight to and from Ürümqi Diwopu International Airport, China, to bring 900,000 face masks and 80,000 respirators made in Zhengzhou and Yiwu provinces to Latvia.

The flight, operated by one of the airline’s Airbus A220-300, registered as YL-CSI, departed from Riga on March 28, 2020 and landed in Ürümqi Diwopu International Airport, China later that day, after a request from National Health Service of the Republic of Latvia. The return flight took off early morning on March 29, 2020.

This task was executed in close cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia, National Health Service, AirLink Aviation Services and Wish Global. Overall, 619 boxes, that is, 5.1 tonnes of approximately 900,000 face masks and 80,000 respirators were ferried in the aircraft. The flight time from Riga to Ürümqi Diwopu International Airport was 5 hours and 46 minutes and the return flight took slightly extra, 6 hours and 35 minutes. The aircraft covered a distance of 4,815km non-stop one way between the two cities.

Post the completion of task, Air Baltic took to social media to share their fine achievement.

In these times of uncertainty, many airlines including Lufthansa, Air Lingus, and now Air Baltic have come forward to provide a helping hand for various medical facilities supporting public health care. While many airlines have also opted to use their passenger jets to carry cargo to satiate business demands, it is indeed overwhelming to see the heroics of airlines like Air Baltic, providing passenger jets to carry medical and health care equipment!

In critical times like these, it is important that we all stay together, hand in hand. Indeed, we applaud Air Baltic for their medical support, and we hope many more airlines would come ahead to lend a helping hand!
